General Motors Defiance
Powertrain's history begins shortly after the Second World War,
with American soldiers returning home looking for work and the
means of transportation to be get them there and back. Goods and
services were in great demand. And, Detroit responded.

August 27, 1946 |
GM announced a new
foundry would be built in Defiance, Ohio. |
November 1, 1946 |
Central Foundry was
organized as a Division of General Motors. |
September 1947 |
Ground was broken for
the construction of the new Defiance Plant. |
August 23, 1948 |
Iron was first poured
into diesel block molds. At 294,000 square feet, the original
plant included line numbers 1, 2 and 3 and had four 84 inch
cupolas.

December 6, 1948 |
UAW CIO was voted to
represent the Defiance employees of General Motors. |
March 4, 1949 |
Check for $505.38 was
received from an area farmer for Central Foundry Division's
share of crops raised in 1948. Farming was the only profitable
operation the first year.

August 15, 1949 |
With the addition of
second shift, employment reached 900 people. Three customers
were Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Diesel.

October 5, 1953 |
A new cafeteria was
completed and opened. |
December 31,1953 |
Men's, women's and
supervisor's locker rooms were completed. |
February 21, 1955 |
Line number 4 mold
conveyor was installed and put into operation. |
April 2, 1955 |
F. James McDonald,
who became president of GM, started as plant manager.

Line number 5 mold
conveyor was installed and put into operation. |
October 23, 1958 |
Pouring conveyor for
shell mold was installed and put into operation. |
August 27, 1958 |
Malleable iron was first
poured. |
November 22, 1958 |
Robert G. Guilliam
graduated as the first apprentice electrician. |
1958-1964 |
34,000 tons of
aluminum blocks and heads were poured for the 215 V-8 aluminum
engine used by Oldsmobile, Buick and Pontiac.

1959-1967 |
422,00 tons of malleable
iron were produced. |
June 1966 |
Iron was first poured in
Defiance Plant 2 West. |
June 1971 |
Defiance Plant 2 East
was completed with the largest flaskless molding facility in the
foundry industry.
