General Motors Powertrain (GMPT) designs, engineers and
manufactures engines, transmissions, castings and components for
GM vehicles and other automotive, marine and industrial original
equipment manufacturers. It has operating and coordinating
responsibility for GM's powertrain manufacturing plants and
engineering centers in North and South America, Europe and the
Asia-Pacific region, with global headquarters in Pontiac,
Michigan. With its alliance partners that includes Fiat-GM
Powertrain joint venture, Fuji Heavy Industries, Isuzu and
Suzuki, GM has access to almost 25 percent of the global
industry's total powertrain capacity.
The
GMPT team, which includes approximately 76,000 members, represents
the largest workforce of any GM division. It also ranks among the
world's largest automotive suppliers. It currently has operating
and coordinating responsibility for 38 manufacturing plants and 11
engineering centers in 13 countries. GMPT employees design, test
and produce about five million engines—4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and
V8 gasoline and diesel—and five million transmissions—automatic
and manual—each year. Transmission facilities are located in
Michigan and Ohio, Canada, France, Germany, Austria, Brazil and
Mexico. Engine plants are in Michigan, New York and Ohio, Canada,
Mexico, England, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Brazil, Argentina and
Australia. Casting operations are located in Michigan, Ohio,
Indiana, New York, Mexico, Brazil and Australia. Components plants
are in Michigan, Virginia and Canada.
General
Motors Defiance Powertrain employs approximately 1,100 hourly
employees in two plants. Built in 1948, Plant 1 produces gray iron
block and head castings in a 1,104,938 square foot facility. Plant
2 West, which was built in 1965, pours nodular iron crankshafts
and malleable iron transmission parts in a 554,919 square foot
facility. Plant 2 East pours aluminum blocks and heads in a
338,619 square foot facility. Aluminum blocks and heads are
manufactured through a precision sand process on four mod lines.
Customers include Tonawanda Engine, Flint V-6, Flint V-8, St.
Catharines Engine, Romulus Engine, Livonia Engine and Toledo
Hydromatic.
